Jack’s Point sits within an upmarket residential development, but unlike many courses built alongside housing, the golf here was never an afterthought. Architect John Darby was given the best land on the old high country farm to work with, and he used it to put the golf course first. The result feels less like a development amenity and more like a course that happens to have some very well positioned homes around it.
The course takes its name from Jack Tewa, a farmhand known as Māori Jack who saved a man from drowning in the lake in 1862. Later that same year, Tewa found the first gold in the Arrow River, setting off the gold rush that shaped this part of Otago. It’s a fitting bit of local history for a course built on land with so much of its own story.
Darby wanted golfers at the lake as quickly as possible, so the opening holes climb steadily to get you there. The second hole is where the course starts to show its teeth, a demanding tee shot followed by an uphill approach guarded by deep bunkers. It’s a taste of what’s ahead, though the green does slope back to front, giving players a little help on the way in.
The par five fifth is where Jack’s Point really opens up. It plays as a cape hole over wetland, with longer hitters tempted to carry a bunker for a shot at reaching the green in two. Play it safer and you’re rewarded with your first proper look at the lake, though the approach from that route is partially blind and flanked by dense matagouri scrub, so a stray shot comes at a cost.
From there the course settles into a genuinely fun run along the lakefront. The sixth is a reachable par four that rewards an aggressive drive, and the seventh, a short par three to a green perched right above the water, is the most photographed hole on the property. It looks straightforward but plays tricky in wind, since there’s no long grass to read the breeze off.
The back nine moves away from the lakefront but loses none of its character. The par four tenth pairs a short front nine par three feel with a distinctive stone wall, or ha ha wall, built from scratch along the fairway edge, reportedly at a cost of around NZD 250,000. It’s a striking, historic looking touch on a course that’s only been open since the early 2010s.
The sixteenth continues the theme with an exhilarating downhill drive to a fairway split by schist outcrops. Take the direct line and you’re rewarded with a straight run into the green. Play safer and you’ll need to carry some rock and rough to get there.
The round closes with two half par holes running in opposite directions, so you’ll play one with the wind and the other into it, a nice bit of course management to finish on. There’s also a fun par three nineteenth hole with a wild green, perfect for settling any final bets from the round.
Jack’s Point has a reputation as a cart course given the hilliness of the terrain, though most golfers find the walk manageable since the steepest climbs come early. What stays with our clients isn’t the difficulty rating, it’s the setting. Few courses in the world let you play toward mountains like the Remarkables with a lake at your feet the entire way around.
