Just outside Queenstown, in the historic gold-mining town of Arrowtown, sits a golf course that has quietly earned a reputation among those in the know as one of the most characterful rounds in the South Island. Arrowtown Golf Club doesn’t have the length or the glossy resort trimmings of some of its Queenstown-area neighbors, and that’s exactly the point. At just under 5,600 meters from the back markers, it’s short by modern standards. But ask anyone who has played it, and they’ll tell you it’s one of the most fun and demanding rounds you can find in the region.
Arrowtown grew up alongside the town it’s named for, and it shows. Locals sometimes call it “Narrowtown,” a nod to the way the fairways thread through tight gullies lined with schist rock outcrops, remnants of the area’s gold-mining past. Rather than smoothing over this rugged terrain, the course builds its character around it. Small undulations, valleys, and rocky outcroppings appear throughout the round, all set against a backdrop of the surrounding mountains.
The club purchased its original block of land in 1935, replacing an earlier six-hole layout that dated back to 1911. That first nine holes were shaped entirely by hand, using rakes, wheelbarrows, and push mowers, a detail that helps explain why so many of the natural schist formations were left in place rather than cleared. When the club later acquired an additional block of land across the road in the 1970s to build a second nine, the original designer returned to oversee the work, which is part of why the two nines feel like they belong together despite being built decades apart.
One of the more unusual features of Arrowtown’s design is the complete absence of bunkers. Instead, the course relies on tightly mown run-off areas, small punchbowl greens, and the natural movement of the land to create its challenges. It’s a design approach with a handful of well-known parallels among classic courses worldwide, and it gives Arrowtown a distinct identity: a course that rewards accuracy and touch far more than raw power.
Recent changes to the routing, which swapped the order of the two nines, mean golfers now build toward the course’s strongest stretch of holes rather than front-loading them, and everyone passes the clubhouse at the turn rather than finishing a long way from it.
Arrowtown’s greens are famously small, which means players can often find the heart of the green and still be left with a lengthy putt. That combination of tight targets and short overall yardage makes club selection and shot-shaping just as important as distance off the tee. Several holes stand out for good reason: a mid-length par 3 to a punchbowl green tucked behind a mound, a par 5 that funnels through a narrow valley before opening up to a green pushed up against the hillside, and a closing hole that plays as a cape-style test, rewarding golfers willing to challenge a gully for a better angle into the final green.
Three short par 3s round out the round, including one with a green set in a narrow pass between hillocks that ranks among the course’s most memorable holes.
Queenstown’s golf scene is well known for its high-profile resort courses, and rightly so. But Arrowtown offers something different: a small, walkable, endlessly interesting layout with genuine mountain views and a strong sense of history in every hole. For golfers building an itinerary around the Queenstown area, it’s a course that rewards a bit of curiosity, proof that a big golfing experience doesn’t always need a long scorecard.
