Wairakei Golf & Sanctary GEO certification

Originally constructed in the early 1970s by the New Zealand government as a way of supporting tourism within the region, Wairakei Golf & Sanctuary is set on 450 acres outside of Lake Taupo. Today this course is privately owned and well known for the many birds which roam the grounds freely thanks to a very large 3.5 mile fence that keeps predators out.

Recently we were happy to see Wairakei was awarded the GEO Certified® ecolabel due to its "extensive efforts to operate environmentally as a harmonious sanctuary and golf course." Being GEO Certified® means it is a golf facility that has met a "credible standard in the areas of nature, water, energy, supply chain, pollution control, and community." As efforts across all of New Zealand look to preserve native flora and fauna, Wairakei remains not only a really nice golf course to play but a true Kiwi course!

Originally architected by Commander John Harris, fellow Englishman Michael Wolveridge, and Australian Peter Thomson - 5 time winner of the British Open, this was one of New Zealand's first internationally recognized modern golf courses. It remains simply a gorgeous parkland-style course and playing it is fun due to both its challenging design and bird song!

While in the Taupo area many will take hikes in the nearby geothermal areas, visit the famed Huka Falls or do any number of outdoor activities. Contact one of our experts today and we would love the opportunity to help plan your next trip to this special area!
