Luxury Development Begins to Takes Root

Construction has begun on a new nine-hole golf course at Gibbston Valley Resort, a luxurious development nestled near Queenstown, New Zealand. This project is part of a larger $750 million investment in the region.

Renowned golfer-turned-architect Greg Turner has lent his expertise to designing the course, which is taking shape adjacent to the winery at the western edge of the Kawarau Gorge. To enhance accessibility, an underpass connecting the winery to the resort is currently under construction and slated for completion in early 2025.

Overcoming Challenges and Embracing the Landscape

The project has faced its share of hurdles over the years, including the global financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these challenges, the development team has remained committed to preserving the integrity of the popular Gibbston Valley Trail.

The course is in a unique location between the main highway and the picturesque Kawarau River, which provides golfers with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the river gorge. Interestingly, remnants of the area’s gold mining history, such as distinctive tailings, have been incorporated into the course’s design, adding to its character.

A Versatile Golfing Experience

The layout features a mix of five par fours and four par threes, with the longest hole measuring approximately 380 yards. To accommodate a wider range of players, the course can also be played as a par-three layout by utilizing forward tees on the par-four holes.

One of the standout features of the course is the inclusion of two undulating double greens, shared by holes one and eight, as well as holes two and six. Rather than traditional bunkers, the course utilizes the natural terrain, remnants of gold mining, and prominent rock formations to create challenging and visually striking hazards, similar to the renowned Arrowtown Golf Club nearby.

When it opens in 2025, the nine-hole course at Gibbston Valley Resort promises to offer golfers an unforgettable experience against the stunning backdrop of the New Zealand landscape.
