A testament to exceptional design and construction, Windross Farm Golf Course stands as a prominent feature of New Zealand’s golfing landscape. Located a short drive from Auckland, this stunning course was meticulously crafted over six years by renowned architect Brett Thomson, with invaluable input from Phil Tataurangi.
Initially presented with a challenging canvas of farmland used for agriculture, the designers transformed the site into a golfing paradise. Through a massive undertaking involving the importation of half a million tons of clay, they sculpted the terrain into rolling hills and valleys, creating a dramatic and visually appealing course. To further enhance the natural beauty, 50,000 indigenous plants and 1000 native trees were carefully integrated into the landscape.
Windross Farm offers a unique blend of links-style golf, with its open fairways, undulating terrain, and minimal tree cover. However, unlike traditional links courses, the course is characterized by its vibrant green landscapes and lush surroundings
Designed with golfers of all skill levels in mind, Windross Farm provides a welcoming and enjoyable experience. The generous fairways, coupled with well-placed bunkers, offer ample opportunities for confident tee shots. Even beginners will find the course approachable, as there are no forced carries from the forward tees.
The 3rd hole (par-3) tee box sums up the course perfectly:
Understand the Elements: Facing a prevailing wind from the Southwest (which needs to be accounted for across the entire course) will dictate club selection
Accessibility to All Skills: One may have either a short 85 yard tee shot (red tees) to the green or a more daunting 190 yard shot (from the tips)
Modern Design: Tee boxes may be moved across 50 yards in tournament play- bringing new shot-making decisions and increasing play-ability
10th: The approach on this hole is interesting in that there is a trap on the backside of the green. If the pin is placed such that it is in line between the player and the bunker, it can look as if the flag is placed directly next to the hazard. This trick of perception can cause a shot being played with not enough force and thus setting up a harder putt. Be bold!
