The Otago Golf Club

A piece of New Zealand golfing history since 1871, this course, referred to as “Balmacewan” is one of the oldest in the Southern hemisphere

The Otago Golf Club was established in 1871 and is hailed by some as New Zealand’s oldest, as well as being one of the oldest in the Southern Hemisphere.

This is partially correct, as the heavy Scottish heritage in this area did establish a club in 1871 only to see membership falter and resurrect one year (1892) after Christchurch had re-established its own club in 1891.

In either case Balmacewen (BALM-a-Que-En... as it is referred to by the locals) is a historic course. Golfing legends like Gene Sarazan, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player have graced its fairways. Markers on the course provide locations where approaches were made and tournaments won and lost. The course has hosted the New Zealand Open seven times- the first in 1908 and the last being in 1971, which was won by the great Peter Thompson.

Bordered on one side by native bush and on the other by Dunedin’s raised suburbs, the club has views of the city, the Otago Peninsula and the hills of Mt Cargill and Flagstaff. It's a unique blend of links and parkland golf in a beautiful setting. With a fantastic staff and welcoming membership golf's shared passion is palatable here!

What a fabulous itinerary you made for us. It was perfect!

Wonderful country, delightful people, delicious food, and amazing scenery like no other. I guess our only major complaint is that we didn't have longer to see more of the country! You really planned it well for us. It felt balanced in the way of activities, driving days, photo opportunities, even some R&R in the afternoons.

My wife and I, along with Sandy and George, arrived home about two weeks ago from a trip to New Zealand that you facilitated. The four of us have been traveling together for 47 years after meeting in a small Bed & Breakfast in London in 1971.  We have traveled extensively in Europe, Canada, United States, and South America.

New Zealand was a distant stretch for us, and then we asked Julie for help on the recommendation of friends and she took us to you.  And that was our lucky day!

The five weeks we spent in New Zealand were possibly the most seamless, best organized trip we have ever experienced.  The accommodations were outstanding, everyone of them. The accommodations fit very well with the itinerary that we gave to you. Each and everyone exceeded our expectations from Auckland to Invercargill.  The people we met in the B&Bs were very accommodating and attentive to all of our needs. We did not consider them as hosts but rather New Zealand friends.  The food was excellent.  Tour suggested excursions were always right on target.

I believe the only thing that would have made the trip better was to stay longer.  This was meant to be a onetime experience, but already there has been suggestions of a return.

Thank you for your part of this fantastic adventure!
