Kaitaia GC

Located next to 90-mile beach, a destination which attracts thousands to the 'Winterless North' that is the Northland, Kaitaia is a true links course complete with mountains that fade into a beautiful sprawling sand beach

Like a few of the local Kiwi courses throughout the country (referred to as "experience" courses by Tourism New Zealand) the land onto which Kaitaia GC was built in the early 1960s would be astronomical in cost today. Located adjacent to 90 mile beach in Ahipara (actually about 9 miles from the town of Kaitaia) this course has natural beauty and is built on sand- so it has a great ability to drain and remain open all year round.

This "hidden" course, tucked away in the corner of the Northland, plays as a true links course with a location next to one of the most beautiful beaches around. Players will need to contend with the wind off of the sea but there is some consolidation in that the weather is the warmest in the country- that the farther north you go... the closer you get to the equator.

Play Info and Signature Holes

The front nine of Kaitaia GC moves next to a line of pine trees and has a sandy base, being close to the beautiful Ninety Mile Beach.

4th: Par-4 played into the wind. Tee shots pass a narrow group of trees bout 25 feet forward. Keep the ball down in order to penetrate into the wind, stay straight and avoid being right. The approach is to an elevated green with a slope off of the front and the back.. which opens on the other wide to showcase the light blue ocean water.

6th: Par-3 signature hole named "The Drop" is a short hole (at 125 yards) and plays into the wind. When it is windy do not be afraid to hit a low numbered iron if it's blowing with pace. Three pot bunkers protect a green surrounded by native beachside brush. One of the many holes with 90-mile beach as a background.

7th: "Inland" hole with grass-covered dunes on either side of the teebox. This hole is narrow and long so the crosswind can present a real challenge. In true links style, the fairways and greens are features of the natural land undulations- remaining opens to the elements and presenting great fun for attacking the pin with your approach.

15th: Par-5 Beautifully set up tee offers players with the opportunity to face 90-mile beach (if right handed) while hitting toward mountains in the background. If you hit the ball to the right it will be lost to the beach, so it's best to drive the ball with a draw. Most golfers will be advised to lay up on the approach and provide themselves a slight chip. Two putt and pat yourself on the back for getting through this one even.

18th: Par-4 Drive-able.. if the wind is not blowing too much.

From all of us, thank you for a fabulous trip to New Zealand! We cannot begin to tell you how much we loved everything you put together for us! Every detail ran like clock work and each lodge was better than the last! A highlight was our daughter’s engagement at Cape Kidnappers where we were spoiled by the staff to a lovely wine cellar dinner! But add that to all the heli fishing and fine golf everywhere, we could not have had a more memorable, special trip! Many thanks for a great job on the part of you and your team.

Frank and the Best of NZ team were exceptional in their planning support and execution of our trip to NZ North Island. We gave them the parameters - dates and golf courses we wanted to play and the pacing we wanted for the trip in terms of days in each region - and they produced an absolutely amazing trip for us. All of the arrangements were flawlessly executed and we sailed through the trip effortlessly. their expert advice - how much driving vs. in country driving would be ideal for us to maximize our experience, the excursion to Cape Reinga which was amazing, having our dinner prepared the first night after a long day getting to Bay of Islands was perfect and the selection of accommodations in Hawke's Bay was brilliant.

We will never forget the spectacular views from Kauri Cliffs golf course, the jet boat rides in Taupo, cycling through the vineyards in Hawke's bay and ending up sipping chardonnay with lunch at Clearview winery, the splendor of playing golf among the birds and grounds at Wairakei, and ofcourse the spellbinding course at Cape Kidnappers. We could tell Best of NZ have strong relationships in NZ because the people we encountered in NZ as our guides/hosts reflected just that - professional and friendly. NZ was an amazing, epic experience for us and we could not have asked for better support and execution from Best of NZ/Frank and his team. We cant wait to go back, this time to the South Island!!!!

Thanks again Frank, YOU are the Best and the Best of NZ is truly the BEST!!
