Muriwai Golf Club

Laid out excellently to present a different challenge every day, this links course demands attention to the wind with every swing

As the Auckland area's only true links style course Muriwai Golf Club is a year-round destination known for both its layout and surrounding blacksand beaches. Although the facilities here are sparse, the course is impressive and worth the 30 minute day trip from Auckland CBD if looking for a true Kiwi golf experience.

The land is part of a regional park located on the coast to the west of Auckland and draws its watering supply from the local streams. As one descends from the high cliffs which overlook the course and the Tasman Sea the surf comes into view. Blacksand from nearby beaches comprise that which is found in the bunkers, and lends ruggedness to the course. Coastline views, gannets floating updrafts, and the sound of waves crashing on the shoreline bring serenity to this course.

Gusty winds off of the water create a wonderful test, and play is year round thanks for good drainage and the temperate climate of the North Island. If played in the morning a decent post-round activity may be to visit a few of the beautiful wineries on the drive back into Auckland.

Highlights Of The Trip: Getting off the plane in Queenstown – overwhelmed with the beauty. The boat ride in Queenstown to experience the expansiveness.

The drive from Queenstown to Franz Joseph - the mountains and glacier lakes that went on forever. Our lunch spot that day at a campsite on a lake. Abel Tasman: this is where I want to return and spend a week to hike the entire trail. Spent the day biking in Napier to wineries.

The Henley was incredible. What a find. Incredible grounds, the staff was waiting for us when we pulled up, great rooms, lovely breakfast. We could have stayed another day or two. Definitely the perfect place for us to recharge after the flight and a busy day... Everyone has been enjoying the trip.
