The Hills Golf Course, the brainchild of Sir Michael Hill, offers a unique golfing experience on New Zealand’s South Island. Combining sport with art through its on-course sculpture park, this championship layout is a must-play for golfers seeking something extraordinary.
Designed by Darby Partners and opened in 2007 to host the New Zealand Open, The Hills is set amidst a dramatic glacial valley. The course’s layout showcases the area’s rugged terrain, featuring dramatic elevation changes and rocky schist outcrops.
While challenging for accomplished players, The Hills is also thoughtfully designed to be enjoyable for golfers of all abilities. The course’s natural beauty is complemented by a stunning array of sculptures by local and international artists.
The Hills’ development was somewhat organic. The story goes that Sir Michael, looking out over his former deer farm, decided to create a putting green. With the help of his friend and course designer John Darby, one green led to another, and another.
The clubhouse, designed by NZ Architect Andrew Patterson, perfectly complements the course’s natural beauty. Patterson’s design is “in harmony with the landscape” and has a “presence of religious proportions that stops people in their tracks.”
Today, The Hills is a quintessential Kiwi experience, blending ruggedness with beauty. Golfers can enjoy not only the course’s many sculptures but also its all-inclusive tariff. A round at The Hills is a truly unique experience that can’t be found anywhere else in the world.

The 18th Hole: This par-5 concludes the round with a dramatic descent towards a picturesque lake. The green is surrounded by bunkers, making for a challenging yet rewarding finish.
The 7th Hole: A par-3 that requires a precise tee shot over a water hazard to a small, elevated green. The stunning views of the surrounding mountains make this hole a memorable experience.
The 12th Hole: This par-4 is a dogleg right that demands accuracy off the tee. The green is surrounded by water, adding to the challenge and drama.
